Touchal – Damavand tour

Damavand Tour: Conquer Iran’s Highest Peak

Mount Damavand, standing tall at 5,671 meters, is not only the highest point in Iran but also an iconic volcano that offers stunning views of the majestic Alborz mountain range. Known for its almost perfect conical shape, Damavand is typically covered in snow from December through May. As an active volcano, it features fumaroles and sulfur vents, adding to its allure. While it attracts many Iranian mountaineers in the summer, the peak is rarely visited during spring due to the limited development of mountain skiing in the country.

To ensure proper acclimatization before attempting Damavand, climbers often begin their journey by trekking to Touchal (3,960 meters), located just north of Tehran. This allows you to adjust to the altitude, enhancing your chances of a successful ascent.

Climbing Mount Damavand offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore the stunning Iranian mountains, making it one of the most rewarding experiences for any mountaineering enthusiast.

Touchal – Damavand tour detailed itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Darband (1800m) & Trek to Shirpala (2700m)

Upon arrival, our team will warmly welcome you at Imam Khomeini Airport or the IBIS Airport Hotel, depending on your flight schedule.

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive to Tehran’s TV Tower, “Borje-e Milad,” one of the tallest TV towers in the world at 435 meters. From the observation deck, take in the panoramic views of Tehran, the surrounding mountains, and Mount Tochal. Next, we drive to the starting point of your first trek in Iran, located in the far north of Tehran.

Today’s hike will take you up Mount Tochal (3,933m), Tehran’s beloved local mountain. You will ascend to Shirpala Refuge (2,750m), which offers comfortable rooms, beds, and a restaurant. The path is well-maintained but requires good footing as you’ll encounter some rocky terrain.

  • Transfer (Airport to Tehran): 1 hour (30 km)
  • Trekking: ↑ 950m, 4 hours
  • Accommodation: Elevation: 2750m, Refuge

Day 2: Ascend Mount Tochal (3960m), Descend to Tehran & Transfer to Rineh (2300m)

We begin early with a trek that offers spectacular views of Tehran below. Reach the summit of Tochal for a panoramic view of the Alborz Mountains and Tehran. After summiting, we descend back to Darband and continue our scenic drive through a picturesque mountain road, passing ski resorts popular with Tehran’s locals. We will then arrive at the small village of Rineh, located at the foot of Damavand, the starting point for all Damavand ascents.

  • Transfer (Tehran to Rineh): 3 hours (90 km)
  • Trekking: ↑ 1210m, 4 hours | ↓ 2160m, 4 hours
  • Accommodation: Elevation: 2300m, Local House

Day 3: Ascent to Camp 2 (Bargah 3) (4250m)

After an early start, we drive to the Saheb-al-Sahman Mosque at 3,020m. Along the way, enjoy the stunning mountain scenery and meadows, depending on the season. Upon arrival, we meet the mule drivers who will carry your excess luggage, allowing you to ascend with ease. The climb to Bargah-Sevon mountain hut (4,200m) takes about 5 hours. We’ll spend the night in two-person tents provided.

  • Transfer (Rineh to Camp 1): 3 hours (90 km)
  • Trekking: ↑ 1210m, 4 hours
  • Accommodation: Elevation: 4250m, Tent

Day 4: Acclimatization Day

To adjust to the high-altitude conditions, we take a shorter climb to an altitude of 4,800 meters, where we’ll rest for about 30 minutes before descending back to Camp 2. This day is essential for preparing your body for the final ascent.

  • Trekking: ↑↓ 550m, 5 hours
  • Accommodation: Elevation: 4250m, Tent

Day 5: Summit Day – Ascend Damavand (5671m) & Return to Camp 2

We begin our summit attempt early in the morning, around 5 AM, after a wake-up call at 4 AM. Damavand, meaning “frosty mountain” in Persian, is known for its chilly summit temperatures, even in summer. While the ascent is technically straightforward, it does require sure-footedness and physical stamina.

On the way up, you’ll cross old snow fields and encounter sulfur fumes near 5,100 meters, a reminder that this is an active volcano. After 6-7 hours of climbing, you’ll reach the summit, where a breathtaking view of Tehran and the Caspian Sea awaits. After enjoying the summit, we descend to the Bargah-Sevon mountain hut for the night.

  • Trekking: ↑ 1420m, 6-7 hours | ↓ 1420m, 3-4 hours
  • Accommodation: Elevation: 4250m, Tent

Day 6: Return to Rineh & Drive Back to Tehran

After breakfast, we deliver our gear to the porters and head back down to Camp 1. From there, we drive back to Rineh, where we say goodbye to the village. Along the way, we’ll stop to visit the ancient Kafar Koli caves, which date back over 2,000 years. After reaching Tehran, we’ll settle into our hotel for a well-deserved rest.

  • Trekking: ↓ 1250m, 2 hours
