Climbing Damavand from North-west route

Sardagh ridge is the point of connection between Damavand peak and Alborz mountain range, which is located on the northwest side of this mountain. Also, this ridge is one of the important and attractive climbing routes of Damavand peak.
Furthermore the northwest route is one of the most attractive routes for mountaineers who are interested in climbing less known and remote routes.

Advantages of climb Damavand from Northwestern route

First : The northwest route and the west route have the shortest climbing routes to Damavand.

Second : It is possible to access the origin of the ascent at an altitude of 3,600 meters with two-wheel drive vehicles

Third : Among all Damavand routes, the northwest route has the highest starting point because Sardagh ridge is the connecting point of Damavand with the Alborz mountain range.

Fourth : The northwest route is located near the important and permanent glaciers of Damavand, such as Siuoleh and Dobisel, and   has wonderful views and effects.

Climbing Damavand from north-west route summarized program

Day1 : Ascending Touchal Mountain to Shirpala Shelter (2700 meters)

Day2 : Climb Tochal peak then return to Tehran and transfer to Polur village(2300m)

Day3 : Transfer to parking and Climbing Damavand mountain up to Simorgh Shelter (4100m)

Day4 :  Acclimatization up to 4800 meters

Day5 : Mount Damavand climb and return to the shelter

Day6 : Return to Polur then transfer to Tehran

Climbing Damavand from north-west route detailed itinerary

Day1 :Ascending Tochal Mountain to Shirpala Shelter (2700 meters)

This morning, our agent will meet and welcome you at your residence , then you will be transferred to Darband where is an important square  in the north of Tehran and start your trekking from there at an altitude of 1800 meters then you walk along one of the most popular trekking routes in the north of Tehran.

Trekking start from the village of Pas Qala, which is a historical village in the north of Tehran. Your walking path extends along the Darband River beautiful riverside restaurants and cafes along the Darband River then you continue your way and enter the Osun Valley and from there you move to the Shirpala hut (2700m) and spend the night there . Shirpala is well equipped hut which has private room , bed and blanket , restaurant and toilet .

At night, you enjoy the silence of this hut and the beautiful views of Tehran metropolis , which is in front of you.

Day2 :Climb Tochal peak and return to Tehran and transfer to Polur village(2300m)

Today we start our trekking early in the morning and hike up to the Tochal peak  while along the route of Tehran metropolis is behind us  .  we reach the peak after about 4 hours of hiking . In good and clear weather, we can see Damavand peak in the northeast, which has a special and unique shape and height compare with the mountains around it .

After descending from the peak, we get in the car and drive to Polur village. After about 2 hours, we reach this beautiful village on the skirt of mount Damavand and spend the night in a mountain lodge .

Transfer : 2 hours (80 km)

Day3 : Transfer to Lar national park (3600m) and Climbing Damavand up to  Damavand camp (4300m)

After getting up you will be transferred by 4WD car to Lar national park . our driving route is a dirt road that finish on beginning of Sardagh ridge at 3600m altitude. Here at the starting point of your ascent you will also meet the mule drivers who will transport your luggage.

You start trekking on a easy and clear trail and after maximum 4 hours walking you will reach to camping area at 4300m altitude. you will spend night in  tent . In the evening you will receive a delicious dinner, which the chef has conjured up well adapted to the altitude and the coming stages.

Day4 : Acclimatization up to 4800 meters

Today is acclimatization day , In order to better adapt to the conditions of high altitude, you will climb to an altitude of about 4800 meters, and after stopping for about half an hour at this altitude, you will return to the  camp and rest to prepare for the next day and climb the peak.

Day5 : Climbing Damavand and return to the camp

In the early morning you will set off for your summit attempt. At 4 o’clock you have to wake up and at 5 o’clock you start to the summit. Since the summit pyramid is completely open and without protection, strong winds are to be expected. With a bit of luck, especially in July and August, you can climb the summit completely without contact with snow and ice.

The ascent route is technically easy and does not require special skills. A solid basic condition and surefootedness are important. In some places it may be necessary to reach into the rock. It may be necessary to cross an old snow field. Right at the start it is recommended to put on gaiters.

From an altitude of 5,300 m you will feel the first sulphur vapours and it will become clear that you are travelling along a volcano. The mountain is no longer active, but you can still feel its breath. After approx. 6-7 hours you will then stand on the highest point of the Damavand volcano and enjoy a magnificent panoramic view.

On a clear day you can even see as far as Tehran or the Caspian Sea. One also sees the top of the 4. 850 m high Alamkouh protruding on the horizon. Who still has power reserves can, after consultation with the mountain guide, walk around the crater (caldera) (walking time approx. 45 minutes).

Day6 :Return to Polur and transfer to Tehran

This morning, after having breakfast and delivering the luggage to the porters, we will move to parking at around 9:00 AM and from there be transferred to Polur village and we say goodbye to its lovely people and move to Tehran. Also, along the way, our guide lead you to visit the 2000-year-old residential caves that is called Kafar Koli, which is located near the village of Rineh.
